These chapters had their genesis in twelve expository sermons preached at Hayes Town Chapel, Middlesex in 1993-4. They were preached in connection with pastoral needs in the congregation, and in particular the personal adversities through which the author and his family were passing at the time. The reason for publishing these addresses in this revised format is the pressure brought to bear by friends who heard them, together with the desire that God may be pleased to use them to succour those who are being tried.
