Description
In the book More Than Notion by J H Alexander, published by the Fauconberg Press an account is given of a revival of real religion which took place at Pulverbach, Shropshire in the first half of the 19th century. The late Dr D Martyn Lloyd-Jones wrote, "In recommending it to the congregation at Westminster Chapel on Friday night I said that it should be made compulsory reading for all theologians especially, but will prove valuable also to all who long for a vital Christian experience."
One of the principle cha acters in More Than Notion is James Bourne (1773-1854). He was the gospel minister used of God in the gracious awakening at Pulverbach. The 16 sermons now published in this present volume give some idea of Bourne's faithful, experiential ministry. They were not preached at Pulverbach, but at Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire, where Bourne was pastor at Maney Chapel from 1846-1854.
Bourne preached extempore so these sermons are simply the notes recorded by his hearers. However even in these outlines something of the weight and power of his preaching is still perceptible. Together with the sermons Bourne's autobiography "Outlines of My Own Life", which has been out of print for over 100 years, is reprinted.
