Dr Alexander Stewart was a prince among expository preachers and the various chapters of this book originally took a form of addresses delivered in the course of his regular ministry. In their printed form they are models of their kind, skilfully reworked by the author, so that they afford as much pleasure and profit to the reader, as he did to the original hearers. They are marked by a deep, but unobtrusive, scholarship, clear, spiritual insight, a sure theological touch and a chaste literary elegance.
Born in Glen Glass, Rossshire, in 1870, Dr Stewart was ordained in the free Presbyterian Church, Oban, in 1898. After service in two further pastorates, he became minister of St. Columba’s Free Church Edinburgh, in 1918, and remained in that charge until his death in 1937. He was moderator of the General assembly of the Free Church of Scotland in 1926, and in that same year the University of Glasgow conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Divinity.
The present volume was first issued in 1925. Dr Stewart’s other publications include Roman Dogma and Scripture Truth, Jeremiah, and Shoes for the Road.
