This work sets out a learned and persuasive case for the practice of restricted communion, a position held by the majority of the Particular Baptist denomination in the eighteenth century but which is often misunderstood and maligned today. Abraham Booth argues that baptism is a prerequisite to participation in the Lord’s Supper, showing that this flows from the Scriptural order of faith, baptism, church membership and participation in the Lord’s Supper. Any other approach is contrary to the Baptist understanding of baptism, and inconsistent with the witness of church history.
Abraham Booth was a leading Particular Baptist minister in the eighteenth century, and the pastor of Little Prescott Street Baptist Church in London from 1768 to 1806. This work, originally entitled An Apology for the Baptists, was considered the foremost defence of restricted communion in the eighteenth century, and remains relevant and important for questions of church order in the present day.
